Debunking Common Skincare Myths
Whether you have a skincare routine that you love or you’re ready to get started with a new regimen, it’s important to ensure that you’re following best practices. While it’s true that skincare should be individualized, there are some common myths that you should be aware of and avoid. Curious about these misconceptions? Here, we debunk some of the most common skincare myths.
Hot Water Is Beneficial For Your Skin (False!)
You may have heard that you should wash your face with hot water to ensure that it’s extra clean. Although you should absolutely wash your face daily, you should avoid using hot water. It’s fine if you enjoy a steamy shower, but the delicate skin of the face is especially sensitive. Hot water can strip the skin of natural oils and moisturizers, so be sure to use only warm water for cleansing.
Pores Can Open and Close (False!)
It’s one of the most common misconceptions out there that you can open your pores with hot water and snap them shut with cold water. We’re here to tell you that this isn’t true! Pore sizes differ between individuals, likely due to genetics, sun exposure, and age. As we age and collagen production decreases, you may notice that your pores appear larger. You can combat this with high-quality retinol products, but unfortunately, cold water won’t help.
Acne Is Only an Issue For Teenagers (False!)
Whether you’ve struggled with acne since your teenage years or you’re concerned that it’s suddenly popping back up, you may be relieved to know that this skin condition is common for all ages. We don’t know why or how the rumor started that acne in adults is uncommon, because it’s one of the most frequently seen issues at our medspa. Acne can occur for a plethora of reasons, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of or worried about. We can help you treat acne, regardless of your age.
You Don’t Need Moisturizer If You Have Oily Skin (False!)
This myth makes sense in theory, but falls flat with a deeper understanding of how the skin hydrates itself. People with dry skin tend to reach for the moisturizer, since dry skin often feels uncomfortable. Those with oily skin, on the other hand, may have been led to believe that their skin is overhydrated and doesn’t need moisturization. However, this line of thinking may actually be counterproductive. Oily skin is often overcompensating for being dehydrated, and adding a light moisturizer can help balance out the oil production.
