What You Need to Know About Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a clinical skincare procedure that deeply exfoliates and brightens up the skin. It uses a hand-held instrument (a dermatome) that contains a back-and-forth blade to even out the skin, minimize fine lines, and remove pesky peach fuzz (vellus hair). Here’s what you need to know about this valuable skincare treatment, which can benefit anyone experiencing skin deficits:

What Happens During Dermaplaning?

The dermaplaning procedure is minimally invasive, so it doesn’t require general anesthesia. While the process isn’t painful for most, you may feel slight stinging or scratching sensations. The razor of the dermaplaning tool doesn’t cut your skin; rather, it removes the top layers of the skin.

The length of the procedure varies widely and depends on the size of the treatment area; it can take a few minutes or over an hour. Anyone who has undergone dermaplaning should use sunscreen post treatment to protect sensitive skin. (Although, we maintain that sunscreen should be worn daily regardless of skincare treatments.)

What are the Risks and Benefits of Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is considered to be a very safe procedure but, like any procedure, side effects aren’t unheard of. The most common include infection, discolored skin, and hypertrophic scars. For many people, the benefits outweigh the risks. The perks of the procedure include:

  • reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines

  • helping to minimize future acne breakouts due to its deep exfoliative nature,

  • brightening dull skin, and

  • firming up healthy skin

…which all result in a rejuvenated, smoother, and a more radiant appearance.

One of our clients, SGF, had the following remarks after her treatment at our Denver med spa,

“Dermaplaning is one of my favorite treatments because it’s quick (my face doesn’t take more than 25 minutes), it removes all the blonde hairs I can’t seem to get rid of otherwise, it’s incredibly relaxing having someone move the blade back and forth on my face, and my skin is more receptive to makeup (it stays on longer) for at least a week or two post treatment. I’ve also received compliments about my skin looking brighter. It’s a big bang for your buck kind of treatment, in my opinion.”
