Acne 101: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that we treat in our medical spa in Denver. Acne can affect individuals of all ages, and occurs when pores become clogged. Although pimples typically appear on the face, they can present on many different areas of the body. If you’re struggling with acne and would like to learn more about preventing and/or treating it, we’re here to help. Here, we share a quick primer on why acne occurs and what you can do to prevent or treat it:

What Causes Acne?

Acne isn’t the same for all individuals. Just as there are many different types of acne (i.e., cystic, hormonal, nodular, and fungal), there are separate causes. Some reasons you may be experiencing acne may include:

  • An excess of sebum (the oily substance that provides your skin with a barrier of protection)

  • A buildup of bacteria

  • Dead skin cells

Pimples on the skin are caused by a blockage of the hair follicle, which leads to inflammation. Acne can be painful, as the inflammation often causes swelling and redness.

How to Prevent Acne

In some cases, acne isn’t entirely preventable. This is especially true if you’re genetically predisposed to acne or if you’re a woman or assigned female at birth. However, there are many steps you can take to reduce your chances of breakouts or to help existing breakouts clear more quickly. Here are some ways you can reduce the risk of an acne flare-up:

  • Wash your face daily with warm water and a cleanser suited to your skin type.

  • Use an oil-free moisturizer.

  • Make an effort to avoid touching your face.

  • Choose non-comedogenic (non-clogging) makeup and skincare products.

Acne Treatment Options

Even when you’re doing everything right, acne can be stubborn and may require treatment. If you’re bothered by how pimples make your skin look or feel, seek help from a dermatologist or medspa team. Depending on the severity of your acne and your desired results, treatment may include:

Topical medications, such as products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid
